Opticomm Corporation Introduces Efficient New Transmission System For Uncompressed Serial Digital Video

-Opticomm unveils the DVX-5400, with Time Division Multiplexing to combine 4 channels with one laser and one fiber-

San Diego, Calif. - April 7, 2003 -- Opticomm, a leading provider of high-performance fiber optic video, audio and data transmission systems, today announced the introduction of the DVX-5400, a new multiplexer that transmits four channels of uncompressed serial digital video across one laser.

The latest addition in the DigiBand® line, the DVX-5400 uses Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) to create an efficient transmission system that eliminates the need for one laser per channel of video. It also eliminates the need for assigning an independent bandwidth to each channel, leaving it available for other assignments. "The cost saving alone in lasers make the DVX-5400 an important cost-saving innovation", says David Caidar, Chief Executive Officer at Opticomm Corp. "Expanding the practical use of existing fiber cabling is of great value to broadcasters... we're giving them the flexibility to send more information than ever before."

Solution Details

Time Division Multiplexing

The DVX-5400 utilizes Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) to assign Recognition Keys to each channel, which travels across the optical fiber to the receiver. The Recognition Keys identify the start of each channel and places them in their proper Doorway. Each packet of four channels can be transmitted at the same bandwidth (with its own place in the time continuum) to:

  • Electronically combine four channels of uncompressed digital video (each with audio and data embedding, AES/EBU per SMPTE 259M) using only one laser, versus one laser per channel.

  • Deliver a Payload for each channel of 270 Mb/s, multiplied by four channels, for a Net Payload of 1.080 Gb/s. When paired with Ancillary Data for additional high-speed data channels, the Overall Payload is up to 2.160 Gb/s.

  • Maximize usage of existing fiber cabling.

  • Work in tandem with CWDM to increase the broadcast channels exponentially.
  • Provide the industry's lowest Bit Error Rate at 10-14 (with 10-12 being the current standard).

  • Save bandwidth. Four channels are transmitted at 1310, rather than 1310, 1330, 1350 and 1390 (with CWDM alone) across one fiber.

With new TDM technology, Opticomm Corp. is leaping ahead of the competition with usable solutions for increasing bandwidth demands. Freeing up available bandwidth and future budget dollars, allowing fiber optic cable management that Technical Managers and Engineers can use.

Fiber Optic Transmission

With the additional need for transmission security and reliability, fiber optics is the premier choice. With the proliferation of video, audio and data information, a low Bit Error Rate is imperative. These needs are addressed by Opticomm's product line designed to:

  • Transmit crystal clear digital signals up to 40 kilometers, without repeaters.

  • Offer superior image stability unaffected by attenuation and noise.

  • Increase security with no known methods of "tapping" into the signal without immediate detection.

  • Compatibility with NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and Standard Video Signals.

  • Thin, durable fiber optic cable is far superior to bulky, heavy copper cable.

  • EMI and RFI immunity.
